The Department of Radiology at Dubai Bone and Joint Centre offers a wide range of diagnostic radiology examinations for booked and walk-in patients. A small dose of ionizing radiation after passing through a patient strikes a plate of x-ray sensors producing a digital computer image directly. A wide variety of X-Rays are done at DBAJ, including the hand, wrist, arm, elbow, shoulder, foot, ankle, leg (shin), knee, thigh, hip, pelvis and spine. In addition chest, abdomen, KUB, skull, para nasal sinuses, facial bones are also done with proper technique and minimal radiation dose.
CT scanning sometimes called CAT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or transferred to a CD.
CT scans is available at DBAJ and images of spine, bones and soft tissues provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Magnetic resonance imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed images. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (X-Rays). At DBAJ all kinds of MRI are done for body organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures at 1.5 Tesla machine. Internationally standardized protocols and markedly reduced scan time is adopted for all the organs particularly musculoskeletal and spinal MRI.
Ultrasound scanning is safe and painless, and produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves without using ionizing radiation (X-Rays). At DBAJ all kinds of conventional ultrasound including abdominal and gynecological USG including transvaginal scans , antenatal 3D and 4D scans, thyroid and breast USG are done. In addition, Doppler ultrasound that evaluates blood flow through a blood vessel, including the body’s major arteries and veins in the abdomen, arms, legs and neck is also done.
DBAJ is one of those few centers where musculoskeletal ultrasonography is done as a routine. USG guided procedures and injections are also preformed. In addition, ultrasound of infant’s hips for developmental dysplasia of hip is also done as a routine.
Bone Densitometry (BMD) or (DEXA Scan)
Bone density scanning, also considered as dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bone densitometry, measures bone loss. This technology is mainly used for the treatment of osteoporosis- a disease in which the bones become fragile and stay at a high risk of breakage. This measurement process is painless and non-invasive and involves minimal radiation exposure. At DBAJ, a state of art DEXA scanner is available that in addition to measure fracture susceptibility to take precaution in week bones having some underlying pathology it also measure the total body fat to identify the cases at risk for heart disease .
C-arm is one of the driving technological forces behind the advancement of minimally invasive surgeries. At DBAJ, availability of this mobile fluoroscopic imaging system allows for less patient discomfort in a variety of surgical and nonsurgical procedures. The minimal invasiveness with the use of C-arms has helped lead to the increase of more cost-effective minimally invasive, pain-reduced outpatient care. At DBAJ, C-arm usage includes minimally invasive, spinal, general and orthopedic surgeries and pain management applications.
